The crater is partly covered by a black ashen volcanic Sea of Sand and partly a savanna; green during the raining season and golden during the dry season. Overlooking the landscape from Mount Pananjakan while the sun rises is an incredible moment. Weather conditions and season dye the colours in the sky. After the sun has risen you will cross the Sea of Sand and you will have time to spend near Mount Bromo and if possible even to hike to the top of the active volcano Bromo. On route back to Surabaya the enchanting Madakaripura waterfalls are another refreshing moment.
