Beluga Boarding, Hudson Bay, Canada
Beluga boarding at Churchill, Manitoba, where belugas migrate into the Churchill River each summer. Wearing a thick wetsuit or drysuit, two people at a time lie on a floating mat towed slowly behind a zodiac, faces in the water, as curious pods come in close enough to see and hear. Four guests per departure plus the guide, out on military grade zodiacs at high tide, with a land safari at low tide; one day can be traded for low tide kayaking with belugas. The season also brings a chance of polar bears and the northern lights. You do not need to swim, but you must be comfortable with a mask and snorkel and able to climb from the zodiac onto the board. Guided by Canadian photographer Shane Gross, who has worked as a local beluga guide in Churchill. Included: five days of beluga boarding, hotel accommodation, breakfast, airport transfers and digital photos. Not included: flights to and from Churchill, lunch and dinner, gear rental, gratuities and travel insurance.
