Hotel Bougainvillea
A garden hotel in Santo Domingo de Heredia, about ten minutes from downtown San José and the airport, open since 1989 and built around a ten-acre botanical garden, which the hotel says the National Gardening Association named the best garden in Costa Rica. The garden holds more than 600 plant species, several ponds where the hotel works to protect three native frog species, and a long list of birds recorded on the grounds, headed by the yigüirro, Costa Rica's national bird. Rooms face the garden or the mountains beyond it, and the hotel has a solar-heated pool, tennis courts, a gym, and the Vitrales restaurant and bar. Booked for you by an affiliated travel advisor.
