Kenai Backcountry Lodge
A restored 1930s hunting lodge and nine guest cabins on the shore of glacier-carved Skilak Lake in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, reached only by boat. Stays begin at the operator's sister lodge, Kenai Riverside Lodge in Cooper Landing, about two hours' drive from Anchorage, and the way in is a full-day raft trip down the Kenai River through Kenai Canyon on mild Class II+ water, watching for moose, bears and bald eagles, with lunch by the river or on the lake shore before the lodge. The cabins sit in the forest along gravel paths and boardwalks, each with at least two beds, a private bathroom and shower, propane heat and lights and a porch; the log main lodge has a lounge and dining room heated by a wood stove, and a small hydroelectric system on a nearby creek cuts its use of generators. Days bring guided hikes, among them the Cottonwood Trail with its views over the lake and up onto open tundra, kayaking on the lake when the weather allows, and natural history talks by the fire, with a wood-fired sauna, a screened gazebo and a lakeside campfire on the grounds. Packages run from June to August and include round-trip transport from Anchorage, meals and activities. Booked for you by an affiliated travel advisor.
