Ultima Thule Lodge

The Claus family's wilderness lodge on the Chitina River inside Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, a hundred miles from paved roads, where the family has homesteaded since 1960. Guests fly in from McCarthy on the lodge's own bush planes, and there is no set itinerary: each day the weather decides, and a pilot and guide fly your group out to a sandbar at the edge of the forest, a mountain valley or a glacier to hike and explore. Moose, bears, bison, Dall sheep and mountain goats are regular sightings. Handcrafted cabins with private bathrooms and 24-hour electricity for no more than 14 guests, a wood-fired cedar sauna and bathhouse, and meals from the lodge's own gardens and greenhouses. Booked for you by an affiliated travel advisor.
